As part of the hands-on curriculum for the Oceanic and Continental Waters course, Biology students participated in a field trip to the Playa El Pelado area in the General Villamil (Playas) canton.
The activity was led by professor and researcher Félix Morales, Ph.D., with logistical support and coordination from Biology student Josué Romero. During the session, students surveyed and analyzed various coastal profile zones, including:
Rocky and sandy shores: Identification of benthic species, substrate adaptations, and wave dynamics.
Coastal lagoon: Evaluation of water physicochemical parameters and the ecological transition between freshwater and marine environments.
Ecological factors: Sampling and assessment of interactions between biotic components (local flora and fauna) and abiotic factors (salinity, substrate, tides, and temperature).
These hands-on experiences in the field complement classroom and laboratory theory, equipping future biologists with practical skills in scientific observation, in situ sampling, and the holistic assessment of aquatic ecosystem health along the Ecuadorian coast.
