Water resource optimization in agricultural areas represents an essential pillar for agricultural resilience and the sustainability of Ecuador's rural sector. Grounded in this focus, the oral defense was held for the postgraduate thesis project titled: "Spatial modeling and analysis of crop water requirements for efficient irrigation management in Bolívar canton, Manabí", presented by Yaser Galarza.
The research was conducted under the academic supervision of Robinson Peña Murillo, Ph.D., and evaluated by an examination committee comprising Paúl Carrión Mero, Ph.D., M.Sc. Randon Ortíz Calle, and M.Sc. Lady Bravo Montero. The study applied geospatial tools and mathematical models to accurately calculate net irrigation depth (water depth requirements) and crop water demands across Bolívar canton. The findings deliver practical technical guidelines to implement efficient pressurized irrigation and fertigation schemes, curbing water losses from evaporation and preventing aquifer depletion.
With the approval of this project, FLS-ESPOL welcomes a new, highly qualified master's graduate prepared to address the challenges of sustainable water management and modernize the country's agricultural production systems.
