During its 24th Ordinary Session, held on August 11, 2026, the Plenary of CACES officially recognized the international accreditation of the on-campus Nutrition and Dietetics program at ESPOL.

This distinction ratifies the accreditation previously granted by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (United States). With this resolution, the international credential is fully recognized within Ecuador’s higher education system and will remain in effect until January 30, 2030.

As part of their practical coursework and community engagement activities, students from the Nutritional Assessment II and Community Health courses in the Nutrition and Dietetics program at FLS-ESPOL carried out a nutritional assessment and counseling session targeted at priority groups.

An outstanding delegation from the Faculty of Life Sciences (FLS) represented ESPOL at NUTRITION 2026, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition (ASN), held from June 25 to 28 in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area. Recognized as the world's premier global forum for nutritional science, the event brought together thousands of international experts, scientists, and healthcare professionals to discuss the most innovative advances in clinical nutrition, public health, and molecular research.

As part of the practical activities designed to complement classroom learning, students from the Faculty of Life Sciences (FLS) participated in a technical field visit to an organic banana plantation currently being established in the Santa Elena Peninsula. The tour was guided and supervised by professor José Rivas, Ph.D., who accompanied the future professionals throughout the day of observation and hands-on learning in the field.

Following the recent confirmation by Agrocalidad regarding the presence of the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa within the national territory, Dr. Freddy Magdama, a research professor at the Faculty of Life Sciences (FLS) and director of the Center for Biotechnological Research of Ecuador (CIBE), provided a crucial technical analysis on managing this threat and the importance of early detection to protect local agriculture.

With a steadfast commitment to generating real scientific solutions for the global agricultural sector, Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL) hosted the 3rd Latin American Symposium on Biological Control. This major international gathering brought together scientists, students, professionals, technicians, farmers, and representatives from private companies and public entities in the city of Guayaquil.

With the objective of strengthening local capacities and ensuring active community participation, the Faculty of Life Sciences (FLS), under the coordination of Dr. Marynes Montiel, conducted an initial training session for promoters from communities located within the Bulubulu River basin. This technical workshop represents the preparatory phase for the upcoming nutritional and health assessment to be executed by the institution.

With the firm commitment to strengthening technical skills and response capacity in the field to address public health challenges, the Supervised Practice Coordination—under the leadership of Josseline Andrade, M.Sc., at the Faculty of Life Sciences (FLS)—in strategic coordination with the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), conducted the Training and Certification Ceremony for Tutors in Community Epidemiological Surveillance.

In a joint effort to strengthen food security and neonatal well-being in crisis contexts, MSc. Luz María Valencia Erazo, a professor in the Nutrition program, participated as a speaker in the "Obstetric and Neonatal Emergency Strengthening Workshop." The event was organized by the Guayas Provincial Health Directorate of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP).

The Faculty of Life Sciences (FLS) hosted a visit from Matthias Gaberthuel, Andressa Lemus, and Damir Ivacic, international executives from Syngenta, as part of the research and development projects currently being executed through this joint partnership.
