In the framework of World Environment Day commemorations, research professors from the Faculty of Life Sciences (FLS) provided their technical perspectives in a television report focused on the urgency of curbing carbon emissions and protecting ecosystem services in the country.
Julián Pérez warned that despite available technologies and multiple existing initiatives, global carbon emissions continue to rise, pushing international targets further out of reach. "By continuing to increase emissions, we are failing to meet our goals, and the trend shows that the planet will continue to experience a rise in global temperatures and climate change," the researcher explained, also pointing out the need to optimize efficiency and diversify the public transit matrix.
For her part, MSc. Andrea Reyes emphasized humanity's deep dependence on coastal ecosystem services, placing special emphasis on the value of mangroves. "Mangroves offer coastal protection and food provision; they are resources of great economic importance upon which many communities in the Gulf depend 100% for their livelihood and food safety," Reyes highlighted.
