Following the recent confirmation by Agrocalidad regarding the presence of the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa within the national territory, Dr. Freddy Magdama, a research professor at the Faculty of Life Sciences (FLS) and director of the Center for Biotechnological Research of Ecuador (CIBE), provided a crucial technical analysis on managing this threat and the importance of early detection to protect local agriculture.

Xylella fastidiosa is a bacterium that colonizes the xylem vessels of plants, blocking the transport of water and nutrients. This can cause wilting and the death of economically vital crops such as citrus, coffee, and grapevines. Dr. Magdama emphasized that prevention, constant monitoring, and collaboration between producers and scientists are the most effective tools to contain the pathogen's spread.

The ESPOL expert made a definitive call to the country's farmers: "It is preferable to report a suspicious symptom on time, before the problem becomes uncontrollable." Furthermore, he highlighted that both the FLS and CIBE maintain an active commitment to developing rapid diagnostic biotechnological tools, supporting regulatory bodies to safeguard food sovereignty and the agricultural economy of the region.
