On March 12 and 13, the regional scientific community gathered at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of the Republic (UDELAR) for the Latin American Bacteriophage Conference (Jornadas Latinoamericanas de Bacteriófagos). This high-level event aimed to integrate researchers, students, and biotechnology companies to discuss the most recent advances in phage research.
Our Life Sciences Faculty (FLS) had a distinguished participation through Ph.D. Marynes Montiel, a research professor at the Environmental Microbiology Laboratory. During the conference, results were presented from various studies focused on bacteriophages that infect E. coli bacteria.
The focus of the research presented by ESPOL centers on the application of these viruses as biocontrol agents—a sustainable and precise alternative to combat pathogenic bacteria and improve environmental and food safety.
The event was attended by experts from various countries across Latin America and the world, fostering a knowledge exchange that spanned from molecular characterization to industrial applications.
